In a David Salle penned remembrance for the late journalist Janet Malcolm, the artist and essayist called art writing, in Artforum no less, a murky enterprise. Hence the title of this blog.

I run it—I being Alex Wexelman: sometime arts writer (Hyperallergic, the Observer, Artsy) and all the time critic of other arts writers and how genuine they are being in their reviews.

I love reviews. I love ratings. I personally review every movie and book I read and now you can read about the art, too. My reason is the same one that Hilton Kramer gave the New American Review in 1971: “No form of artistic expression or body of ideas is fully “real” to me until I have attempted to come to terms with it in written form.”

I’ll be stealing my key from Sean Tatols’ generally very good art blog, The Manhattan Art Review.
